Animals are not entertainment and they should not be props for profit. Here are 15 hotels and resorts that use animal attractions. While some are worse than others, all use exotic or wild animals to attract customers and profit at their expense.

Located in the province of Heilongjiang in northeast China, the Polar Bear Hotel is part of the Harbin Polarland theme park. The bears are the main attraction of this hotel. All rooms have 24/7 polar bear views. It’s like a non-stop zoo.

Located in the Riviera Maya, this seaside resort is known for exploiting animals to attract tourists. The species they have include raccoons, iguanas, coatis, monkeys, and sereques. There have been tales of animal teeth and claws being removed for the safety of guests. The treatment of their animals is cruel and permanently destroys their lives.

3. Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat

This hotel is located in Las Vegas and is a prison for dolphins, lions and jaguars. Animals are treated horribly and not given proper amenities.

A visitor wrote, “The Dolphins look pretty happy, but the pools are so small they can’t seem to do much other than practice sessions.” The user continued: “Lions and tigers look malnourished and sick. The jaguar enclosures (both) are tiny, maybe 6 x 3 meters? They came and went and at that time I felt quite sick.

The user continued on how staff lied to customers. “The staff then ‘educated’ the public saying that dolphins in the wild only live 12-14 years, but here at the resort they can live up to 20 years. Although that may be true for captive dolphins Dolphins in the wild live between 30 and 50. Do not fund this horrible exhibit.

4. Makanyane Safari Lodge

This resort lodge is located in South Africa and exhibits lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes and leopards to its visitors. All rooms are located in the middle of these animals’ habitats and have giant windows for a 24/7 chance of spotting one of these exotic animals.

5. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort

Located in Orlando, Florida, the Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort is designed to give the impression that animals roam “free” on the resort. In reality, they were shipped from all over the world to roam a space of land in Florida for tourists to admire. The complex has 200 animals of 30 different species, including flamingos, zebras, gazelles and giraffes.

6. Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge

Located in Tsavo, Kenya, this stilt hotel is built over a waterhole. Although the animals are still in the wild, it doesn’t seem fair that the buildings are in the middle of an ecosystem important to Kenyan wildlife. As natural spaces for wildlife continue to shrink, should we build in the middle of the little piece of land they have left?

7. Royal Malewane Private Game Lodge

This lodge is located in Hoedspruit, South Africa. The elephants are the main attraction here, and they can walk right up to you. They offer guided game drives to their customers and hamper these environments that should only be reserved for these animals. The resort is built in an area that is supposed to be reserved for wildlife, and it is unacceptable that we continue to believe it is okay to take charge of these areas.

8. Lapa Rios Eco Lodge

This lodge is located in Costa Rica in the middle of a rainforest reserve. This means that the only place these animals can call home is infiltrated by tourists and man-made buildings. Macaws, sloths, monkeys and toucans are all animals subject to tourists.

9. The Flamingo Complex

This resort is located in Las Vegas. It is the house of The pink flamingo Wildlife Habitat and transformed the complex into a hub for the exploitation of Chilean flamingos, as well as ducks, turtles, ibises, seagulls and other animals.

A visitor wrote“Animal show in my opinion is dirty water [that] does not look clean and fresh. The worst part was that the birds were flying all day from tourist to tourist to get their picture taken. Coming from Australia and seeing a cockatoo being treated like that was horrible.

10. Mandalay Bay

This Las Vegas resort has an aquarium with a shark reef and 2,000 animals. They also let untrained people dive with the sharks, further exploiting the animals for profit. Taking giant aquatic creatures and sticking them in a glass tank in the middle of Las Vegas is not fair and should not be supported.

11. Tortuga Lodge & Gardens

Located in Tortuga, Costa Rica, the biggest problem with this resort is that it exposes the laying or hatching sea turtles to tourists. Hatching turtles is a delicate and special thing in nature, and endangering them for profit is irresponsible. There may always be a risk of tourists harming or interfering with spawning or hatching whenever the station brings visitors to their sacred place.

12. The Kahala Hotel & Resort

This resort located in Hawaii has several dolphins in a lagoon on the property. They interact with guests and are the biggest attraction at the resort. These shiny creatures were made into props or forms of temporary entertainment for visitors. While the resort tries to make it look like a real natural experience, it’s still animals in a swimming pool for tourists.

A visitor wrote“I stayed here and had no idea until I walked outside about the dolphins in the small lagoon out back. Dolphins in the wild have a range of 15 to 20 miles a day; these have a range of a few hundred feet a day. The sight of these dolphins made me so sad that I literally sat up and cried. I will definitely never come back here and I ‘encourage anyone who has empathy for these highly intelligent animals to not only not stay here, but to tell management your feelings.’

13. Jumeirah Vittaveli

Located in the Maldives, this resort is surrounded by oceans filled with aquatic animals. Although this does not seem like a problem at first glance, the resort offers many activities around fish. Marine life is delicate and should not be subjected to resort tourists.

14. The Four Seasons Resort (Jackson Hole, Wyoming)

At this station, a biologist helps visitors get up close to wolves, eagles, grizzly bears, bison and cougars in the surrounding wilderness. Trying to find these dangerous and wild animals doesn’t seem like a great idea, and they should just be left alone.

15. Giraffe Mansion

Located in Nairobi, Kenya, Giraffe Manor prides itself on allowing guests to see and interact with giraffes. However, just because someone can afford to stay there doesn’t mean they should be able to get incredibly close to these animals unsupervised.

Sometimes the best way to respect animals is to leave them alone. There are plenty of ways to learn about the animals without invading their natural habitat or caging them and bringing them to a foreign vacation spot. While we’re sure that not every hotel or resort on this list is trying to harm the animals they own, they are all helping to normalize entertainment animals.
