A new educational resource released by the Colorado Foundation for Agriculture teaches students about the food ecosystem. The resource is the first issue of Colorado Reader for the 2021-2022 school year. Through this reader, students explore the concept of a food ecosystem – how human society, animal agriculture, and plant agriculture depend on each other and work together to protect our environment and climate.
The Colorado Reader is a free, interdisciplinary resource designed to bolster Colorado academic standards for science, social science students, reading, and health using real, fact-based, science-based agriculture and food content that can be linked to. students. It is an eight-page student activity journal for upper elementary school students and is also used by middle and high school teachers. The Colorado Foundation for Agriculture publishes up to five issues of the Colorado Reader each school year, depending on funding. The printed version is mailed direct, in class sets of 30 copies each, to 1,800 classrooms in urban and rural Colorado communities, representing 785 schools, organizations, and CSU outreach offices. Colorado Readers are also available electronically as a digital flip-book.
In this issue called âThe Food Ecosystem,â students learn that humans and the food we eat are part of an ecosystem. Animal farming and plant farming provide almost all of the products we depend on every day. Agriculture provides raw materials used for food, fiber, biofuels and many other non-food by-products. The environment and climate affect the plants and animals produced in the ecosystem. Agricultural production, both animal and plant, plays a key role in maintaining a healthy climate and environment. This reader’s content aligns with the Colorado Academic Standards for Grades 3 to 5 Life Sciences and Grades 3 to 5 Reading, Writing, and Communication: Reading for All Purposes useful.
