Disney World rhinos get fitness trackers to study species

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (WFLA) — The rhinos at Walt Disney World Resort’s Animal Kingdom are sporting a new look…they’re equipped with fitness trackers!

Disney is participating with other accredited facilities in the United States to help better understand rhino activity levels, according to the Disney Parks Blog.

Trackers are very similar to those worn by humans used to track steps and activity.

The trackers help animal care staff understand activity during the day and when rhinos are settled in for the evening.

“With the built-in accelerometer, we can track how far they run and walk in the savannah. We can also better track their sleep and nap schedules,” the blog post says.

The trackers also use a GPS unit, allowing staff to see where in the Kilimanjaro Safaris savanna the rhinos spend the most time, allowing Disney to better understand which habitat features are most popular.

Once the survey of accredited facilities is complete, the research will be shared with all animal care professionals at the 74 facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
