Fantasy sport in the UK is on the verge of a growth explosion.
Emerging markets outside of America
The booming daily market in the US offering a potentially attractive alternative to the pattern established throughout the season in the UK and Europe, new and existing DFS providers strive to be at the forefront of the market.
In the United States and Canada, there would be 2 million people playing fantastic sports on a daily basis in a market that continues to grow. The two great players, FanDuel and DraftKings, launched in 2009 and 2011 respectively and initially established in the NFL; they now dominate the market in the United States.
Importantly, none of these suppliers are practicing their profession in Europe, primarily due to the current delicate status of fantasy sports as a game of skill rather than a game (which, given its different status outside of the United States, could cause problems in the mainland for the two behemoths. ).
On the other side of the pond …
On the European side of the Atlantic, the landscape is very different, with providers mainly offering football leagues throughout the season. Notably, the fantasy manager pool is considerably smaller.
The UK’s largest provider of fantasy sports is the English Premier League, with three million users reported on a seasonal basis. The DFS climate in Europe

The opportunity is there

Without a big recognized marketing spendthrif in the UK – no FanDuel or DraftKings (although the latter has applied for a license in the UK) – the opportunity is there for suppliers to build this organic growth and create a new sub-section of the betting and gaming market that reaches the non-betting big fan of sports, the traditional bettor, and the happy medium of the two.
While there is still some way to go for the European DFS market to compete with that of the United States, there are some green advancements that DFS providers can start to be very excited about.
