State Farm is working with the American Red Cross on home fire safety

The two companies have teamed up to educate employees, neighbors, friends and family.

A new home fire safety partnership between State Farm and American Red Cross trained to help employees and friends be better informed and prepared.

The education program is intended to help officers, employees, neighbors and friends.

This home fire safety prevention and action education aims to save lives and property. The American Red Cross responds to an average of 60,000 disasters per year. Most of these events are related to household fires. Last year, State Farm paid out $ 2.2 billion to policyholders who suffered home fires that resulted in 36,000 claims.

These are not only the most common form of disaster in the country, but also the events that claim the most lives. Seven people die every day from house fires. That said, while natural disasters such as tornadoes and hurricanes cannot be avoided, home fires often can. Education and preparation can make a huge difference in stopping a fire before it happens.

The home fire safety partnership consists of making a preparedness commitment that has two stages.

The two stages of the Readiness Commitment are:

  • Hold a fire drill for two minutes, twice a year
  • Test smoke detectors once a month

The Pledge to Prepare website provides useful information as well as a downloadable evacuation plan worksheet. Families can use this feature to develop an escape plan for every room in their home. The site also offers step-by-step instructions for testing smoke detectors, as well as advice in case the device malfunctions.

“As a company, our mission is to help people manage the risks of everyday life,” said John Burns, vice president of fire claims operations. “The collaboration between State farm and American Red Cross on Pledge to Prepare will help raise awareness of what to do to reduce the impact of a home fire. It’s another way to help communities prepare for the unexpected.
